South Bay Expressway Named South County 'Pioneer'
South County EDC Highlights South Bay Expressway Project's Significance
(SAN DIEGO - October 12, 2006) - South Bay Expressway was recently honored with the Pioneer Award by South County Economic Development Council (SCEDC) at its 16th Annual Economic Summit. The Pioneer Award is presented to a leader or business whose visionary contributions have broken traditional societal, political, or economic barriers; whereby opening doors and setting a new course for the South San Diego County region.
South Bay Expressway received the Pioneer Award for building a 10-mile technologically advanced toll road that will run from SR-54 in Spring Valley to SR-905 near the Otay Mesa International Border Crossing. South Bay Expressway is considered by many to be the most significant transportation project in San Diego County in more than a decade and the key to future economic development in eastern Chula Vista and Otay Mesa. SCEDC also noted South Bay Expressway's commitment to the environment and community involvement as exemplary.

The Economic Summit, which took place Thursday, October 5, 2006 at the San Diego Convention Center, was attended by more than 300 public officials, community leaders and business representatives from San Diego and Tijuana. The event's featured presenters included state and federal government leaders. SCEDC's Summit focuses on economic development trends and activities that enhance South County's economic growth. The awards program recognizes local leaders who are making a difference in the South County community.
